The Mount Gambier and Districts Health Service is part of the Limestone Coast Local Health Network. The hospital provides acute services ranging from in-hospital care by local general practitioners to specialist surgical, obstetric, paediatric and anaesthetic services delivered by medical consultants.

There is currently no private hospital in this town.

Maternity/obstetrics

Level 2 Obstetrics and neonatal nursery, a resident paediatrician and two resident obstetrics and gynaecological specialists, a midwifery booking clinic and a domiciliary midwife program.

Mental health services

Operating both child and adult services, the mental health teams provide triage, assessment, and various levels of intensive support, and assertive management or care depending on identified need. The teams consist of nurses, social workers, occupational therapists, a psychologist and the resident Psychiatrist. Visiting psychiatrists and via tele-medicine also supports the work of the team.

There is also an Integrated Mental Health Inpatient Unit. The service includes a full complement of multi-disciplinary staff including a full time psychiatrist, which brings benefits to all mental health consumers in the region and community team.

Stroke services

The Mount Gambier Hospital is one of three stroke services in country South Australia, providing specialised treatment for suitable stroke patients 24 hours a day, seven days a week, supported by metropolitan stroke units.



General Practice

There are numerous general practice clinics located centrally in the township of Mount Gambier.

Clinics range from National corporate groups to solo practitioners and are located right across the region.

Some clinics are training facilities for rural generalist training, and all are eligible to support GPs on the PEP training program.

Mount Gambier is currently classified as MM3 and is a DPA.

Rural incentive grants may be available for some GP positions in this region.

The Flinders University Rural Clinical School also provides rural medical education experiences for students enrolled at Flinders University in Bachelor of Medicine and a community-based allied health program, the Integrated Multidisciplinary Model for Education in Rural Settings (IMMERSe) for allied health students.

Vocational Training is available through TAFE.

Mount Gambier Airport is serviced by Regional Express Airlines (REX) and QantasLink which provides regular return passenger services between Mount Gambier and both Melbourne and Adelaide.

Mount Gambier by car is 450 kilometres from Melbourne and Adelaide. Bus services also run from both cities.
